A Replacement Key Is Two Jobs, Not One
Most people picture key replacement as cutting a piece of metal. On any car built in roughly the last twenty-five years, that's only half of it.
Cutting shapes the physical blade so it turns in the door and ignition. That might be a traditional edge-cut blade or, on most modern cars, a laser-cut (sidewinder) blade milled along the flat of the key.
Programming is the part that actually gets you moving. Inside the key is a transponder chip carrying a unique code. Your car's immobiliser reads that code when you turn the key or press start, and if it doesn't recognise it, the engine won't fire — even though the key physically turns.
That's why a blade-only copy may open the door but won't start most immobiliser-equipped vehicles unless the transponder is also correctly programmed. Both halves have to be done, and the programming half needs diagnostic equipment matched to your manufacturer.

Which Kind Of Key Do You Have?

Basic Blade Key
No electronics at all - just a cut piece of metal. Found on older vehicles, typically pre-1998, and on some vans and agricultural machinery. Quickest and cheapest to replace.
Transponder Key
Looks like an ordinary key but has a chip in the plastic head. The car won't start unless the chip is programmed to the immobiliser. Standard on most cars from the late 1990s onward.
Remote / Flip Key
Combines a cut blade with buttons for central locking, often folding into the fob. Both the blade and the remote functions need setting up, so there's more to the job.
Smart / Proximity Key
Keyless entry and push-button start - the key stays in your pocket. The most complex and most expensive to replace, because the fob is a genuine electronic module rather than a key with buttons.

If you still have a working key
This is the straightforward version. The existing key gives us a reference to work from, the car is already accessible, and adding a second key to the system is usually quick. If you're reading this before losing anything, this is the cheap moment to act — see spare car keys.
If every key is lost ("all keys lost")
More involved. We first have to gain non-destructive entry to the vehicle, then read key data directly from the car rather than copying an existing key, sometimes at module level. On some vehicles previously lost keys can also be erased from the system, so a key someone else has found no longer starts your car.
Both are routine work. The all-keys-lost version simply takes longer and costs more, and anyone quoting you a single price without asking which situation you're in isn't quoting accurately.

A blade-only copy may well open the door, but most immobiliser-equipped vehicles won't start unless the transponder chip is also programmed to the car. Some outlets can clone certain transponder types, but many cannot, so it's worth checking exactly what you're being sold.
What proof do I need that the car is mine?
