Inside every modern car key is a transponder — a small chip carrying a unique code. When you turn the key or press the start button, an antenna in the vehicle reads that code and passes it to the immobiliser. If the code is one the car recognises, the engine management system is released and the car starts.
Programming is the process of teaching the car to recognise a new code. It isn't a physical operation at all — nothing is cut, filed or fitted. It's a data operation carried out through the vehicle's electronics, which is why it needs diagnostic equipment rather than a key machine.
This is the part that catches people out. A key cut at a general kiosk may well open the door, because that's purely mechanical. But without programming, most immobiliser-equipped vehicles simply won't start with it. Both halves of the job have to happen.

The Different Jobs This Covers
"Key programming" describes several genuinely different operations, and which one you need makes a real difference to time and cost:
Adding A Spare Key
The simplest version. You already have a working key, and a second is added to the vehicle's list of accepted codes. Usually quick, and much cheaper done alongside a first key than as a separate visit later.
All Keys Lost
No working key exists, so there's nothing to copy from. Key data has to be read from the vehicle itself, sometimes at module level, after gaining entry. More involved, but routine work.
Erasing Old Keys
Removing previously programmed keys from the immobiliser so they'll no longer start the car. Worth doing if a key has been lost somewhere identifiable, or after buying a used vehicle.
Remote & Central Locking
The transponder and the remote buttons are separate functions. A key can start the car perfectly while the lock and unlock buttons do nothing, and that's a separate programming step.
Module-Level Programming
Where the diagnostic port route isn't available, data may need reading directly from the immobiliser module or a memory chip. This is the work that separates equipment levels in this trade.
Resynchronisation
After a flat battery, a jump start or ECU work, a key and immobiliser can fall out of step. Re-syncing puts them back in agreement, and no new key is needed at all.

Often yes, and we're happy to. But it's worth knowing what you're taking on, because this is where people most commonly lose money trying to save it:
- Quality varies enormously. Cheap aftermarket keys and fobs are not all equal. Some program and work faultlessly for years, others fail to accept programming at all, or work for a few weeks and then stop.
- The chip has to be the right type. Transponder chips come in many variants, and a listing saying it "fits" your model doesn't guarantee the chip inside matches what your immobiliser expects.
- Some arrive pre-locked. A key that has already been programmed to another vehicle can sometimes be locked to it permanently, in which case nothing can be done with it by anyone.
- The blade still needs cutting. An online key usually arrives uncut, so there's a cutting job on top of programming regardless.
So the honest position: bring us the key and we'll try. If it programs, excellent, and you've saved money. If it won't, you've still had the call-out for nothing — there's no fee for trying — but you'll have bought a key that can't be used.

Every Manufacturer Does This Differently
There's no universal method. Some manufacturers store key data in the engine ECU, others in a dedicated immobiliser box, others again in the body control module. Some allow programming through the diagnostic port in minutes; others require a security code to be retrieved first, or the module read directly.
That's the practical reason we carry several programming platforms rather than one. No single tool covers every manufacturer and every generation, and a locksmith with one machine covers whatever that machine happens to support.
It's also why an honest answer sometimes has to be no. A small number of very recent premium models require manufacturer security clearance that no independent locksmith can access. If yours is one of them, you'll be told immediately rather than after a wasted visit.

What's the difference between cutting and programming a key?
Cutting shapes the blade so it turns in the lock - purely mechanical. Programming teaches the car's immobiliser to accept the key's transponder code so the engine will start. Most modern keys need both, which is why a key cut at a kiosk may open the door but won't start the car.
Can you program a key if I've lost every one I had?
Yes. That's an all-keys-lost job. Rather than copying an existing key, the data is read from the vehicle itself after gaining entry, sometimes at module level. It takes longer than adding a spare but it's routine work.
I bought a key online. Will you program it?
Usually we'll try, and there's no fee for trying. Be aware that cheap aftermarket keys vary a lot in quality, the chip type has to match what your immobiliser expects, and some arrive already locked to another vehicle. Can you stop an old key from working?
On many vehicles, yes. Previously programmed keys can be erased from the immobiliser so they no longer start the car. Worth doing after losing a key somewhere identifiable, or after buying a used vehicle where you don't know how many keys exist.
My key starts the car but the buttons don't work. Is that programming?
Yes, but a different part of it. The transponder and the remote functions are separate. Remote and central locking can usually be programmed without touching the immobiliser side at all.
Do I need to go to a dealership for key programming?
For the vast majority of vehicles, no. A mobile locksmith with the right equipment can do it at your car, usually faster and for less. A small number of very recent premium models do need manufacturer clearance, and we'll tell you upfront if yours is one.
How long does programming take?
It varies genuinely by vehicle. Adding a spare on a straightforward system can be quick, while all-keys-lost or module-level work takes longer. You'll get a realistic estimate on the phone before we set off.
Will programming a new key erase my existing ones?
Not usually, and not unless you want it to. On some systems all keys must be present and re-taught together, which we'd explain beforehand. If you specifically want old keys erased, that's a deliberate choice you ask for.
Can you program keys for vans and commercial vehicles?
Yes - Transit, Vivaro, Transporter, Sprinter, Trafic and more, plus agricultural equipment. Commercial vehicles use much the same immobiliser technology as cars.
