How Cars Actually Get Stolen Now
Hot-wiring effectively died with the immobiliser. What replaced it is quieter, faster and aimed at the electronics rather than the mechanics:
Relay Theft
Two people, two signal boosters. One stands near your house picking up the fob's signal through the wall, the other relays it to the car on the drive. The car believes the key is present, unlocks and starts. No forced entry, no noise, often under a minute.
OBD Port Attacks
The diagnostic port under the dash can be used to program a blank key to the vehicle. It's the same principle legitimate locksmiths use, which is exactly why access to that port is worth restricting on a targeted vehicle.
Key Cloning
Copying the transponder data from an existing key. Worth thinking about if a key has ever been out of your sight - a valet, a garage visit, or a key left with someone you'd rather it hadn't been.
Old-Fashioned Forced Entry
Still happens, particularly for what's inside the car rather than the car itself. Damaged locks and ignition barrels are repairable, and that's a large part of what this page is about.
The Free Precautions Worth Taking First
Before spending anything on hardware, these are worth doing. We'd rather you did them and never needed us:
- Keep fobs away from the front door. Relay attacks work through walls and windows, and the hallway table is the single most common place a fob gets picked up from. Moving it to the middle of the house genuinely helps.
- Use a signal-blocking pouch. According to Thatcham Research, the UK's independent vehicle security testing body, storing a fob in a Faraday pouch significantly reduces relay-attack risk. Test it: if the car doesn't respond with the fob inside the pouch, it's working.
- Check whether your fob has a sleep function. A number of manufacturers now let the fob be switched off, usually by pressing a button combination. Your handbook will say if yours does, and it removes the vulnerability entirely while it's off.
- Park thoughtfully. Off-road, in the light, and where the car is overlooked. If you have a drive and a garage, using the garage still beats every gadget on the market.
- Don't leave anything visible. Most vehicle crime is opportunistic and aimed at what's on the seat rather than the car itself.

Ignition barrel replacement. A worn barrel that sticks, turns without engaging, or has been damaged in an attempted theft. Replacing it restores proper operation and removes the weak point.
Door lock and barrel repairs. After a break-in or attempted entry, damaged locks leave the vehicle insecure and often won't take a key properly. These are repairable rather than automatically requiring a whole new door mechanism.
Steering locks and physical deterrents. Unfashionable and genuinely effective. A visible mechanical lock takes time to defeat and makes noise doing it, which is why thieves working quietly at night tend to move on to an easier car. When buying one, look for products tested by an independent body such as Sold Secure rather than the cheapest thing available.
Key deletion after a loss. If a key has gone missing and you're worried about where it ended up, many vehicles allow previously programmed keys to be erased so they'll no longer start the car. Often the most reassuring thing we can do.
Honest assessment. Some vehicles genuinely need extra hardware. Many don't, and the free precautions above are enough. You'll get told which yours is.

Every manufacturer secures its vehicles differently, and the sensible precautions differ with them. Keyless entry is standard on much of the current Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi range, which makes fob storage the priority. Older Fords, Vauxhalls and vans are more often targeted through physical entry and the ignition barrel, where a mechanical deterrent earns its place.

What To Do If It's Already Happened
If you've come out to a damaged lock, a smashed window or a car that's been gone through, the order matters:
- Report it first. Contact the police via police.uk or 101 before repairs begin. You'll need the crime reference number for insurance, and it's harder to get afterwards.
- Photograph the damage. Before anything is touched or cleared up. Insurers ask, and it takes ten seconds.
- Then get it secure. We can replace damaged locks and ignition barrels so the vehicle isn't sitting open to a second visit, which is more common than people expect.
- Consider deleting old keys. If a key was taken or you can't account for one, erasing it from the immobiliser means it won't start the car again.

Does a Faraday pouch actually work?
Yes, when it's a decent one and used consistently. According to Thatcham Research, the UK's independent vehicle security testing body, storing a fob in a signal-blocking pouch significantly reduces relay-attack risk. Test yours by trying to unlock the car with the fob sealed inside - if nothing happens, it's doing its job.
Is my car at risk from relay theft?
If it has keyless entry or push-button start, the vulnerability exists in principle. If you use a traditional key that has to go into the ignition, relay theft isn't the threat to worry about - physical entry and the ignition barrel are more relevant.
Are steering locks worth bothering with?
They're unfashionable but genuinely effective, mainly as a visible deterrent. A thief working quietly at night would rather move to a car without one. Look for products tested by an independent body such as Sold Secure rather than buying on price alone.
Can you replace an ignition barrel?
Yes. Worn barrels that stick or turn without engaging, and barrels damaged in an attempted theft, can be replaced at your vehicle in most cases.
Someone has my old key. Can you stop it working?
On many vehicles, yes. Previously programmed keys can be erased from the immobiliser so they'll no longer start the car. It's worth doing if a key has been lost somewhere identifiable, such as with a wallet or address details.
My car was broken into. What should I do first?
Report it to the police before repairs begin, via police.uk or 101, and photograph the damage. You'll need the crime reference for insurance. Then get the locks made secure - a second visit by the same person is more common than people expect.
Do I need an alarm or a tracker fitted?
Possibly, but it's not automatically the answer, and poorly installed aftermarket electronics wired into the immobiliser circuit are a genuine cause of no-start faults. Worth discussing what your specific vehicle actually needs first.
Can you secure a van or commercial vehicle?
Yes. Vans are frequently targeted for tools rather than the vehicle, and lock repairs, barrel replacement and physical deterrents all apply the same way.
Will you try to sell me security I don't need?
No. A fair number of people who call end up being told the free precautions are enough for their vehicle, and that's the honest answer even though it doesn't generate an invoice.
