KEY FOB REPAIRS

Key Fob Repairs in Leicester — Usually Cheaper Than A New Key

A fob that's stopped working isn't automatically a replacement job. Far more often it's a battery, a worn button contact, water damage or lost synchronisation — all of which cost a fraction of a new programmed key. We diagnose the actual fault before quoting you for anything.

THE HONEST VERSION

Most Fob Faults Aren't A New Key

There's an obvious commercial temptation in this trade to quote a full replacement key the moment someone says their fob has stopped working. A replacement is a bigger job and a bigger invoice.

But most fobs that come to us don't need one. A dead battery, a rubber button that's worn through, a cracked case letting moisture in, or a fob that's simply fallen out of sync with the car — these are all repairs, and they cost considerably less than a new key cut and programmed from scratch.

So we diagnose first and quote second. If a repair will genuinely fix it, that's what we'll recommend, even though the replacement pays better. If the fob is beyond economic repair, we'll say that too, and explain why rather than just presenting a bigger number.

COMMON FAULTS

What Usually Goes Wrong

Fobs live in pockets and bags, get dropped, sat on and occasionally washed. These are the faults we see most:

Flat Or Weak Battery

Comfortably the most common cause. Range drops off gradually before it fails completely, so if you've been standing closer to the car to unlock it lately, that's the warning sign.

Worn Button Contacts

The rubber pad and the contact beneath it wear out with use. Typically one button goes first - usually unlock, since it gets pressed most.

Water Damage

Rain, a washing machine, or a drink spilled in a bag. Sometimes recoverable if it's dealt with quickly, sometimes not, depending on what the moisture reached.

Cracked Or Broken Case

A dropped fob can crack the shell or snap the blade. The electronics inside are often perfectly fine and can be transferred into a new casing.

Lost Synchronisation

Fobs use rolling codes that change with each press. Press one enough times out of range and it can fall out of step with the car, needing a re-sync rather than a replacement.

Transponder Or Board Fault

Less common, but the chip or circuit board can fail. This is the one case where replacement is usually the sensible answer, and we'll tell you if that's what we find.

Two Things Worth Trying First

We'd rather you saved the money if the fix is genuinely simple. Both of these are worth ruling out before anyone travels to you:

  • Try your spare fob. If the spare works perfectly, the problem is the fob rather than the car, which narrows things considerably. If neither works, the fault may be with the vehicle's receiver instead - see immobiliser diagnostics.
  • Change the battery. Most fobs take a common coin cell, and it's often a straightforward swap. If a fresh battery brings it back, you've solved it for the price of a battery.

A word of caution on opening the fob yourself: the cases are usually clipped rather than screwed, and prying at the wrong seam can crack the shell or dislodge the board. If it doesn't come apart easily, stop — a cracked case turns a cheap battery change into a genuine repair.

Also worth knowing: most modern cars have a hidden mechanical key inside the fob and a concealed keyhole on the driver's door, so a dead fob rarely means you're locked out. If you are, that's emergency car unlocking and we're available 24/7.

THE PROCESS

How A Fob Repair Runs

Diagnosis first, so you're only paying for what's actually wrong.

1

Describe It

What the fob does and doesn't do, whether a spare works, and anything that happened just before - dropped, washed, battery changed.

2

We Test It

Battery output, button contacts, signal transmission and whether the car is receiving anything at all.

3

Repair Or Re-Sync

Battery, contacts, case transfer or resynchronisation to the vehicle, depending on what the testing shows.

4

Tested Before We Leave

Lock, unlock, boot release and any other buttons checked working at normal range before the job's finished.

WHAT WE CAN AND CAN'T DO

When A Repair Isn't The Answer

Being straight about the limits is more useful than promising everything:

  • Severe water damage can corrode the board beyond recovery. Sometimes a fob that's been through a wash cycle comes back, sometimes it doesn't, and nobody can promise which until it's opened.
  • A failed transponder chip generally means a replacement key rather than a repair, because the chip is what the immobiliser reads.
  • Some sealed smart keys on newer vehicles aren't designed to be opened or serviced at all, and the manufacturer's intended fix is a new unit.
  • If the car itself isn't receiving, the fob may be fine and the fault sits with the vehicle's receiver or immobiliser system instead.

In each of those cases we'll explain what we found and what the options are. There's no call-out fee either way, so a diagnosis that ends in "this one needs replacing" doesn't cost you anything to find out.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Key Fob Repair FAQs

Is a key fob repair cheaper than a new key?

Almost always, yes, and often by a considerable margin. A battery, button contacts, a case transfer or a resynchronisation all cost far less than a replacement key cut and programmed from scratch. That's why we diagnose before quoting.

My fob only works very close to the car. What's wrong?

That's the classic sign of a battery losing power. Range drops off gradually before failing completely, so it's usually the first thing to check and often the whole fix.

Can you fix a fob that's been through the washing machine?

Sometimes. It depends how far the moisture reached and how much corrosion has set in. It's worth trying, but nobody can honestly promise a result before opening it up.

One button works and the others don't. Is that repairable?

Usually yes. That pattern points at worn button contacts rather than a dead fob, and it's one of the more straightforward repairs.

My fob case is cracked but it still works. Can it be saved?

Often, yes. The electronics can frequently be transferred into a new casing, which is much cheaper than replacing the whole key. It's also worth doing before moisture gets in through the crack.

Neither of my fobs works. What does that mean?

If both fobs have failed at once, the fault may be with the car's receiver or immobiliser rather than the keys. That's a different diagnosis - see our immobiliser diagnostics page.

What is resynchronisation and why is it needed?

Fobs use rolling codes that change with each button press. If a fob is pressed repeatedly out of range, it can fall out of step with the car and stop being recognised. Re-syncing puts them back in step.

Should I just try changing the battery myself?

It's worth a go and we'd rather you saved the money if that's all it is. Just be careful opening the case - the halves usually clip rather than screw together, and forcing the wrong seam can crack the shell.

Can you repair smart keys and proximity fobs?

Many of them, yes. Some sealed units on newer vehicles aren't designed to be opened or serviced, in which case a replacement is the manufacturer's intended fix and we'll tell you that upfront.
